Sasa School

School System

Sasa is a double-stream school with two units: Preschool and Primary. The preschool is for small children and is also called Nursery School. This unit takes children from age 3 to about age 5. Basically, children remain at the preschool unit until when they are ready and mature enough to join the primary unit. When the children finish the seven years of primary school, they are roughly between 13 and 15 years old.

The school has boarding facilities for children from faraway homes.

The method and contents of teaching at school follows Tanzania’s national curriculum. The academic calendar has two terms, each extending for roughly five months.

All students wear school uniform of grey, blue and white colours. On sports day they wear blue sports uniform or navy-blue track suits.

The Academic Calendar

The academic calendar begins in January every year, and has two terms, each extending for roughly five months. The first term is from January to May; the second term is from July to November.

Between the terms there is a break of one month, and within the term there are short breaks of two weeks giving the kids a total of about three months’ school holiday through the year.

Enrolment & Requirements

The preschool unit takes children from age 3 to about age 5. Normally, children are promoted to Primary school when they are 6 or 7 years old. When the children finish the seven years of primary school, they are roughly between 13 and 15 years old.

A normal child joining Sasa School has to apply or request for a vacancy. The request can be made by a parent or a recognised guardian. After admission, the parent has to contribute to the running costs of the school by paying a subsidised amount of school fees. The parent has also to provide school uniform and shoes for their children. The school uniform includes grey dresses with white collars for girls; grey shorts and white shirts or T-shirts for boys. For boarders, there is a extra set of uniform to wear around hostel. Boarders have also to buy bedsheets, mosquito net and other personal clothing.

A handicapped child applying for scholarship has to meet the area Social Welfare Officer for disability and poverty assessment.
